Australian producers, exporters, and consumers can now participate in an expanded Product Guarantee of Origin (PGO) scheme following newly enacted legislation.

Under the updated rules, the scheme's eligibility has broadened beyond hydrogen produced via electrolysis. Businesses can now apply if they produce, distribute, or consume hydrogen generated through solid gasification, pyrolysis, or gas reforming. The expansion also covers iron ore, aluminium, biogas produced via anaerobic digestion, and biomethane derived from biogas upgrading.

According to the Clean Energy Regulator, these changes are designed to enable producers to make credible, objective, and verified claims across a broader range of commodities.

The scheme is planned to expand further over time, with future additions intended to include low-carbon liquid fuels, ammonia, and other green metals as the framework continues to develop.
