Expressions of interest have opened for positions on Australia's newly established National Ocean Advisory Group, with applications closing on Thursday, 19 November 2026, at 5:30 pm AEDT, according to the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water.
The Advisory Group is one of two bodies created to support the implementation of Australia’s Sustainable Ocean Plan. While the intergovernmental National Ocean Steering Committee unites Australian governments across jurisdictions and portfolios, the Advisory Group is designed as an independent, non-statutory body intended to provide non-government expertise and strengthen collaboration across ocean interests.
According to the department, the group will bring together First Nations peoples, non-government organisations, researchers, scientists, young people, and representatives from marine sectors such as fishing, aquaculture, shipping, ports, tourism, recreation, defence, restoration, and energy.
The Advisory Group is tasked with delivering practical and strategic input to the National Ocean Steering Committee to shape government approaches to ocean management and key marine issues. It will also serve as a regular forum for cross-sectoral discussions to identify emerging risks, opportunities, and priorities.
Applicants are being sought with expertise across the Sustainable Ocean Plan's focus areas, which include climate action, protection and restoration, ocean industries, First Nations, collaboration, equity and inclusion, knowledge, and finance. Applications are being accepted through the e-Recruit portal.
